A New Lease In Life

There are some things that are just timeless. At Grandpa’s Toys we delight in bringing back to life quality wooden toys that you might recognise from your childhood.

The wooden washing line was one of our first products that we gave a new lease in life. Many visitors to the Rockhampton Handmade Markets ┬ástop and reminisce over the washing line and fond childhood memories. It wasn’t long before Grandpa added the washing trolley to compliment the set.

Other blasts from the pasts include the walking trolleys, cradles and ironing boards.

Have you any suggestions on what other wooden toys Grandpa can give a new lease on life? We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us via our Facebook page

Cattle Truck

Rockhampton is the cattle capital of Queensland. It makes sense then that the cattle truck is a familiar sight for the locals. At the handmade markets, Grandpa received a few inquiries about doing cattle trucks. As a proud locally owned small business. Grandpa listened and started the process of making designs for a cattle truck to add to his range.

Grandpa’s design includes engraved windows, grill and door on the cabs, down to the “Do Not Over Take Turning Vehicle” sign on the back. Each wheel is handmade.

In October 2014 Grandpa created his first B-Double trailer. Following a request for a Road Train in November 2014 Grandpa added to the range with a Cattle Road Train.

Benefits of Play

Around the world everyday children are at play. As an integral part of childhood play has many benefits that sets your little one up for success later in life. Play can promote;

* Fine Motor and Gross Motor Skills

* Imagination and problem solving

* Role playing

* Language Development

* Social Skills

* Meeting Emotional and Social Needs.

Physical Benefits of Play

Fine motor skills is the ability to accurately manipulate muscle groups to do intricate tasks. Tasks that require good fine motor skills including drawing and writing, typing, handling eating implements  and through to even hanging out the washing. There are many toys or inexpensive activities that can strengthen muscles to develop fine motor skills. Craft is one inexpensive way to develop these fine motor skills through manipulation of scissors, paint brushes, pencils or crayons. Puzzles and toys requiring building elements also require children to use fine motor skills.

Gross motor skill on the other hand is the ability to manipulate larger groups of muscles to manipulate body movements. When your child is beginning to roll around on their tummy and making movements to crawl this is the beginning of developing gross motor skills. These skills are not automatically programmed into human ability. Gross motor is development, learnt and practiced. Gross motor skills we take for granted as adults include crawling, walking, running, skipping, kicking, catching, climbing and understanding where your body is positioned in a given space (spatial awareness). For your child to develop great gross motor skills – get out and be active!

Cognitive Benefits of Play

Play is not only a physical activity engaging in games of catch; it is also is cognitive activity when children enact their imagination. Terms such as make-believe, pretend play and role playing are ways children act out stories which involve many perspectives, thoughts and feelings. Pretend play is a very normal and real component of the development of your little one.

Researchers have found that engaging in pretend play children demonstrate benefits such as increase language usage, empathy and problem solving. Pretend play also gives children the capacity to explore feelings (positive and negative) in a safe environment. Taking on different roles allows children the unique opportunity to learn social skills such as communication, problem solving and empathy. (Hughes, 1999).
